Jonah Kaplan
Tufts University

Jonah Kaplan is a 2007 JAM winner and a junior at Tufts University, majoring in Architectural Studies and Political Science. While in school he has had the opportunity to study issues concerning the future of "sustainable cities" in conjunction with his interest in architecture and law. He also completed a summer internship with Kings County District Attorney's Office in Brooklyn, New York. In Spring 2008, he plans to study in Florence, Italy, researching the historical development of European cities as well as the European Union. As a board member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity, Jonah has become involved with various volunteer groups, one of which visits and delivers meals to the elderly in the Boston area. Jonah's friends and family describes him as a talented and highly principled young man who pursues his objectives with great passion and has made many friends along the way. – December 2007

Ashleigh Elkins
Dallas Baptist University

Ashleigh Elkins is a freshman studying business at Dallas Baptist University. She plans to earn an MBA after finishing her undergraduate work and would like to eventually become and investment banker. While at Rowlet High School, Ashleigh was an honors student, very active in scholastics, and UIL sports. Her favorite courses in high school were Algebra and Pre-Calculus and Physics. She played soccer competitively, ran cross country and was also cheerleader during her freshman and sophomore years. Outside of school, Ashleigh is very involved in her church's youth-group activities and volunteers with Equest Therapeutic Riding Center, an organization that provides horseback riding as a vehicle to rehabilitate children with disabilities. Those who know Ashleigh, will tell you that she has a competitive spirit and she always stands for what she believes is right. – September 2007

Whitney Elkins
The Shelton School in Dallas, Texas

Whitney Elkins is starting her junior year at The Shelton School in Dallas, Texas. She is working very hard in preparation for college after she graduates from high school. She loves math and art, and she particularly enjoys algebra and the drawing. She is an honor roll student and is a member and captain of the varsity cheerleading squad and also cheers competitively outside of school. She is an active member of the student council and a peer-helper for the Shelton High School. Outside of school, Whitney is involved in her church's youth-group activities. She is also a volunteer for Equest Therapeutic Riding Center, an organization that provides horseback riding as a vehicle to rehabilitate children with disabilities. Whitney is described as an exceptional young woman, known by her friends to be very witty and good-natured. – September 2007

Kabris Dokuzyan
Los Angeles Valley College

Kabris Dokuzyan is a sophomore at Los Angeles Valley College studying economics. After his undergraduate studies, he is considering earning his MBA, and looks forward to entering the corporate arena. Outside of school, he has devoted the last four years to tutoring high school and elementary students at Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies in economics, English, and algebra. An accomplished student, he had mastered these subjects and finds great pleasure in helping others learn and finds tutoring very rewarding. The emotional accomplishment of helping a student understand a subject never gets old to him. Besides tutoring, he also volunteers at the local ice rink, teaching children to play hockey. Kabris credits the Jefferies Scholarship for his excellent education, and feels it has opens doors that might otherwise have been closed to him. He is described as very dedicated, with a positive approach, and an easygoing personality. – September 2007

Conrad Stiller
University of Houston

Conrad Stiller will be a freshman studying computer science at the University of Houston this fall. Conrad has always been computer savvy and is looking forward to making his career in this exciting and ever expanding field. Conrad was a member of his high school band at Andrew Jackson Fundamental Magnet High School in Chalmette, Louisiana and a member of the Math Club at Cypress Creek Senior High School in Houston, Texas. Conrad won the outstanding youth award for St. Robert Bellarmine Parish in Arabi, Louisiana before relocating to Houston where he has become very active in his new church parish of St. Anne. Conrad is described as a very spiritual young man with a big heart, positive attitude, and sharp wit. –July 2007

Pilar Holley
Metropolitan State College of Denver

Pilar Holley will be a freshman at the Metropolitan State College of Denver studying Humanities. She would like to become a social worker focusing on early intervention, and plans to pursue a degree in law to eventually become a district attorney. While at Columbine High School, she was Vice President of the Latin Education Assessment Program, providing tutor services for troubled students. She was also a member of Link Leader, a freshman mentoring program, and was an active member of her school's debate team. Pilar was also a teacher's assistant for special needs students overcoming physical, mental, emotional and social hurdles. Outside of academia, Pilar was the first female vice president of her church youth group. Children are very close to Pilar's heart, and she feels it is her mission in life to empower children to succeed and thrive despite socioeconomic factors. Her friends and family describe her as a determined and adventurous young woman who stands for what she believes. –July 2007

John Nuestro

John Nuestro will be a freshman attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey and will be pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering. John graduated from Northern Burlington Regional High School, where he was ranked 16th in his class. A consistent honor student throughout his high school career, John was also an active member of National Honors Society, Spanish Honors Society as well as Newspaper and Math Team. He has taken special interest in Chemistry, Math, Physics and Computer Aided Design, all of which will help him excel in the path of engineering. Outside of school, he has achieved his 2nd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and was an active volunteer for a number of organizations. John is described by his peers and family as a soft-spoken young man, and as a loyal and trustworthy team player. –July 2007

Jasmine Foo
Brown University

Jasmine Foo is currently a graduate student (PhD candidate) in Applied Mathematics at Brown University where she also completed her undergraduate degree (Sc.B. in Math/Physics). Her research work involves developing numerical methods for solving systems of stochastic differential equations and applying these methods to various applications in biology and mechanics. She has published papers in various professional journals, such as the Journal of Fluids and Structures, Journal of Computational Physics, and Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. She has also presented work at professional conferences such as the American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics conference and the World Congress on Computational Mechanics. She also volunteers as a tutor and mentor at a community center for local high school students in Providence. Outside of academia, Jasmine enjoys outdoor activities such as running, hiking, skiing and travel. She is very close with her family and when she is at home she enjoys cooking and reading. Jasmine is described by friends and family as a very friendly, caring, self-motivated young lady who believes in and strongly stands for environmental protection. –August 2007

Matthew Miello
Western New England College

Matthew will be a senior at Western New England College in Springfield, Massachusetts. He is pursuing his Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering, and was on the Dean's List this past Spring semester. Matt has always taken his studies seriously and has worked to maintain a strong grade point average. He is currently interning at Smith & Wesson in Springfield, learning industrial processes and a programming language that operates some of the equipment used by the company. In high school, Matt was a member of the ice hockey team. Outside of school, he worked part-time at the local Goodyear Auto Center while in high school and continues to do so during school breaks, and is skilled at car repair and maintenance. He enjoys keeping up with the latest electronics and when his studies allow, likes to relax with a good movie from his collection or playing video games with his friends. Matt's friends and family would describe him as someone you could depend on, always willing to lend a helping hand, and an all around good person. –August 2007
